10 infamous battlefields to visit this fall

Because wars change the course of history, subsequent generations strive to preserve and commemorate them. These 10 crucial cemeteries, battlefields, memorials and monuments to wars past around the world provide a hands-on history lesson. Visit them in the autumn; the crowds will have calmed down for the season, and the changing leaves at each site will be at their prettiest.

Winter 22456, with the exception of the "provocation" issue I have to agree with you

100%.  The only provocation that U.S. has had to deal with in the past

century is Pearl Harbor and 9/11. Prior to that was the British, 1776 and 1812 .

This is one of two places I would like to visit before I die. The other is the Arizona memorial at Pearl Harbor. I'd like to walk the beach at Normandy with a WW2 vet and have him describe it to me. Or have some reading material on that day with me.

ok -after much research -infamy and infamous are negative words -perhaps MSN could have used a better word -but it is an error in semantics   ---we shouldn't get hung up on it --they could have called it simply "10 Well Known Battlefields" to visit and commemorate on Veterans Day.

My family and I had the privelege of visiting The Alamo a couple years ago. I was impressed with the reverance this place is viewed with still in these modern times. It's very quiet inside the barracks and especially the church. Santa Anna deserved the end he got. Killing him would have been easy. As it was, he died minus the respect of even his countrymen, tho he is revered to a degree today. He was as arrogant as he was vain, traveling with things like good china while his men lived the life of 'normal' military men. And he had no regard at all for human life. This is a great place to vacation, and dont forget the riverboat rides!

Infamous battlefields?  Almost too many to mention. Pearl Harbor, Midway, Chosen Reservoir, Battle of Bull Run, Battle of Stalingrad, Iwo Jima, Tarawa, Guadalcanal, Saipan, Garapan, Tulagi, Cold Harbor, Jutland, Tsushima Staits, Battle of Kursk just  to mention a few but the most "infamous" of all, and some may not see it as a battlefield but those who were at these sites would see it differently, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Belicose humans, it's amazing that we still exist on this planet.

Infamous, Infamy, both have very negative connotations,  I could consider the day I married my first wife as a day of infamy, but I would not think of the day of my second marriage as infamous. I think the word choice used in this title was poor.

If you want infamy, how could you leave off Pearl Harbor?

If you look up the word "infamous" the second definition means" brought into infamy " which I take as something that will always be remembered and should never be forgotten  ie "held in our deepest memory as something that changed our lives forever"---  I  paraphrase FDR when he said" December 7,1941 (the bombing of Pearl Harbor) is a day that will live in infamy"--the same can be said about September 11,2001 -so I don't see it as an injustice using the word since the battle sites they chose actually were sites that affected peoples lives -not saying that other less known battlefields are any less important
