This article is epicly uninformed. Has the idiot that wrote this article ever been to any of these places or is he just going off of the stereotypes and then guessing what it would be like? I'm lucky enough to have been to most of these places and know that it isn't like the way that Eric described it. Just read Eric's description of Amsterdam. "You’ll breathe marijuana smoke whether you want to or not. Junkies lie across benches in public squares and inject drugs in parks. Prostitutes pose in glass-fronted cages while customers leer." Anyone who has been there knows that this isn't true. Marijuana smoking is more of less kept to the coffeeshops. People do smoke on the street but it isn't remotely overwhelming; I rarely noticed it. Hard drugs are also not very tolerated and you probably won't even come across them. Prostitutes aren't in cages. They're behind doors. Furthermore, the red light districts are small sections of towns; it's not like they're all over the place. Even furthermore, it's something that you should visit (even if you don't engage in it) because you'll never see anything else like it in the world. Amsterdam has many nice areas that aren't about drugs and sex (although the drugs and sex are fun!) such as Ann Frank's house and the Van Gogh museum.

Their description of Bourbon Street makes me think that the only thing that they've ever seen were highlights from Mardi Gras on television. Bourbon Street is an amazing place to visit as is most of New Orleans. You'll never see anything else like it.

Also, they chose places way too far from each other. It's one thing to say, "Go to Safari Park instead of Seaworld" because if you're in San Diego you can choose either. But to say, "Visit Stockholm instead of Venice" is absurd. If I'm in Italy I can't just hop on a plane and fly thousands of miles to Sweden (which is also an extremely expensive country).

Waikiki is just as bad as South Beach. Wall to wall tourists in tacky floral shirts and ugly, white, hairy legs jutting nobbily from kahki,baggy,ill-fitting shorts. .....and that's the women!! Enough pick-pockets, rip-off artists and junkies to twice stock New York City. Retreat to one of the smaller, less spoiled islands. Stay far away from Maui however. Everything there is over-priced by 300%.

Stockholm is absolutely the best place I have ever visited. I have recommended this as a destination to anyone who cares to listen. It is a place with something for everyone...clean, friendly, fun, with a lot to see and do. I would only caution that I lost track of time during the summer months because there is no "night" and my sleep schedule (or lack thereof) was something that interfered to a minor degree with my ability to schedule excursions

hello, brain vs spellcheck,

Someone doesn't ... delect in fine dining ... I think you meant to say they delight in fine dining.  It's easier to correct someone else, but nobody's purrrrfect.

WTF? The key factor separating Thailand and Costa Rica is child prostitution? Uh, has this author ever been to either place? Totally different cultures, totally different destinations, how can anyone even compare them? Both great places to visit, but couldn't be more different from each other. And if you're going to tell people not to visit Thailand because it has child prostitution, then you better tell them to avoid the U.S. After all, we also have child prostitution, plus a huge problem with gun crimes, excessive incarcerations, etc. What a ridiculous basis for a suggestion.

While I believe this writer is a cheapskate, I do not disagree with all his suggestions. BUT, Mazatlan versus Cancun? Mazatlan is NOT American friendly, they are a family destination for Mexicans and other South Americans, not the US. They are rude, subpar, and I never felt safe for a second. And of course, we stayed at what was labled a four stare resort, yeah, right.

Know your French !

A "gourmand" is simple a person who likes to eat A LOT.

A "gourmet" on the other hand is a someone who delects in fine dining, quality instead of quantity.

But I guess spellcheck didn't catch that.....
