Past and Future Olympic Sites

When the Olympics come to town, no stone is left unturned to prepare for the hosting opportunity of a lifetime. Some cities pull off the feat with flair, but not every host city has earned its Olympic gold. The 1992 Games catapulted Barcelona into the pantheon of European cities, for instance: a win. But a brutal civil war in Sarajevo obliterated almost all of the venues from the 1984 Winter Olympics. Here’s a look at the glamorous 2012 Summer Games location, what remains from a selection of previous Olympiads, and what you can already see changing in host cities for the upcoming 2014 and 2016 Games.

Dear Friends;

The olympic facilities in London were such a fantasy and beautiful visual and experience. How lucky the English are to have this for future events.   World Finals and competition.  England should apply for these and winter Olympics.   Let the memory and experience of the 2012 Olympics live on in the hearts and minds of the world forever.

Thank You for such a wonderful entry and experience into your kingdom.

I thought the Olympics was a private venue? Not a public venue, e.g., public money is not to be use for the Olympics. But, it seems from the Olympics beginning has be support by public dollars. I agree to what you're saying about a waste of human resources, in a world where so many humans aren't able to survive this world of glit and glamorm it's a shame the Olympics doesn't support the plight of the very people the Olympics represents. I think, for every athlete who represent its country of origin, needs to realize and understand who they represent, e.g., not only the elite, but the whole country, even those sub-groups who are suffering and will continue to suffer, long after the Olympics are gone from the host city to a new country and a city. Only for the whole waste fo resources, energy, time and money to be repeat again at 2014 and again at the 2016 Olympic.

Why can't the Olympics take place across the host city, in various existing facilities, highlighting what the city has to offer, no matter the appeal, let us see the real aspects of city and the very people who resides there, not some made up facilities or masked temporary venues/sites.

I wonder when will the USA get to host the olympics and whenever we do, summer or winter, I hope we take from what we have seen recently in other countries who host the olympics and build a REAL olympic park, with new upgraded arenas and so on. It seems that every time we get to host the olympics we always want to use the outdated stuff we already have. case in point, L.A. hosted the olympics I think twice and each time we used the same infrastructure, nothing new. The memorial Coliseum is an exception but everything else needs to be a vast modern improvement......

I absolutely agree with this critique.  It's as if modern world society has returned to ancient Rome and the Coliseum spectacle and entertainment for the masses.  Cities benefit from the construction of centers for olympic competitions and following the games by the use of these facilities by its citizens but the cost/benefit ratio is questionable here.  Relatively few people will take advantage of these superb facilities which were built at great taxpayer expense.  We need to emphasize education, knowledge and finding ways to help the billions of desperately poor people of this planet who often lack the very neccessities of life which we take for granted.  The previous writer is correct:  we need to reorder our priorities to make our world a kinder, saner place to live in.

most of the venues look out of place in their cities, just like that gaudy ferriswheel in London wrecks the skyline of an other breathtaking city..

The modern Olympics are a complete and utter waste of human resources, human energy, time and money. They perpetuate the absurd sports mania that is a crippling industry and brainwashing to youth, especially males. Further, the Olympic organization is bigoted, bribable and almost as overpaid as bankers. Like sports stadiums everywhere, it is a crime that public funds go into these arenas for the overpaid gladiators of our times to perform grotesque rituals for television ratings and dollars. In ancient times, there may have been a true spirit and recognition of individual achievement, but today it is all hype and money. Why do you think music, poetry, dancing and other arts are no longer part of the Olympics, because those are qualitative not quantitative endeavors. The modern Olympics just feeds the capitalist engine, and these sports mainly develop or set the tone for producing cannon fodder for our unnecessary wars.  The only saving grace is the actual, individual dedication and striving for excellence, but a lot of people are making far too much off of this organization.
