I have been a Meditator for 40 years. It brings peace, inhanced intelligence and contact with the substrate of reality. I have known tough old Cowboys and flaky housewives who have taken up the practice and benefited. Some of the posters here are so incredibly stupid, that they could not get the benefit of Meditation, because they could not keep their mind on anything for more than 3 seconds. All they can do is run through posts and put thumbs down clicks or make some political judgment or other indication of their lack of mental power, understanding or focus. I vote Republican. Looks like some of you need to re-examine your beliefs, if that won't strain your busy, but tiny little brains.

Getting away to a retreat is fine, but until you find that peace within you, you're only going to continue finding the same troubles when you return home. Quieting your home, and turning OFF the static (phones, televisions, computers, "drama" from others) can help you rest your mind, center your thoughts and focus on your prayers. Going away is great, but creating a "retreat" in your own home is even better.

As an American and a Christian, I have learned what meditation is and how it enriched my spiritual life. Meditation is the opposite of prayer. When we pray we are telling God what we think we need or want. Meditation is shutting up long enough to hear what God has to say. God works in mysterious ways and not every answer to prayer will miraculously appear out of nowhere. I've come to learn that many answers to my prayers come from within during meditation....that still small voice from within that any Christian was taught at church. God didn't create you to be a mindless little puppet roaming around oblivious to all He created to teach, encourage, heal, and pleasure you...He gave you a brain and soul for a reason.

All these are look very pricey. I have been doing vipassana meditation where the staying and food is free. You can pay whatever you wish to after you complete the course. Nobody will pester you for money. I am surprised with so many centers in USA the author has overlooked it. If anybody is interested they can check it at www.dhamma.org.
