I wonder why they chose a Door County Lighthouse? I have heard that the lighthouse in Algoma, Wi is by far the most photographed in all Wisconsin. It is the first lighthouse outside Door County to the south.
I am a former United States Coast Guard member. First the Statue of Liberty is not a lighthouse. It was made operational as a lighthouse on November 22, 1886. And fell under The Lighthouse Board, but they never considered it to be an important aid to navigation. Lighthouses are first and foremost aids to navigation, not statues or gifts from the people of France. Second Alaska by far has the most coast line. There are two methods by which this is measured. One uses only tidal area and the other uses all coast line. First method has total coast line for Alaska at 6,640 miles and the second at 33,904 miles. Main comes in at number 9 using the first method and number 4 using the second method. Third while Michigan does not have the most coast line, it does have more lighthouses than any other state. I ask the question "which state has the most lighthouses" all the time and no one ever gets it right. And finally, this article is the 5 lighthouses worth a clime this summer, not the prettiest or tallest or oldest. I love all lighthouses and would agree with all of you that have commented about the lighthouses that you speak of, but it is the writers top 5 not ours. I have been to two on the list and was a keeper of the Cape Hatteras light while in the Coast Guard.
