COASTAL HAZARD MESSAGE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LOS ANGELES/OXNARD CA 534 PM PDT TUE AUG 26 2014 ...DAMAGING HIGH SURF...VERY STRONG RIP CURRENTS...AND MINOR COASTAL FLOODING THROUGH FRIDAY... .SURF FROM HURRICANE MARIE WILL CONTINUE TO BUILD ALONG EXPOSED SOUTH FACING SHORES. SURF WILL PEAK THIS EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY...THEN SLOWLY DIMINISH THROUGH FRIDAY...WHILE STAYING ABOVE HIGH SURF CRITERIA OF 7 FOOT BREAKERS OR MORE. THERE IS THE POTENTIAL FOR DAMAGING AND LIFE THREATENING SURF ACROSS SOUTH AND SOUTHEAST FACING SHORES OF LOS ANGELES AND VENTURA COUNTIES. THESE AREAS WILL POTENTIALLY SEE THE LARGEST SURF SEEN IN RECENT YEARS WITH BREAKERS OF 10 TO 15 FEET POSSIBLE. SURF THIS LARGE WILL HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE STRUCTURAL DAMAGE AND SIGNIFICANT BEACH EROSION. LOW LYING AREAS MAY ALSO EXPERIENCE SOME MINOR COASTAL FLOODING NEAR TIMES OF HIGH TIDE. IN ADDITION...VERY STRONG RIP CURRENTS AND LONG SHORE CURRENTS WILL LIKELY CREATE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND LIFE THREATENING CONDITIONS FOR ANYONE. WHILE LOS ANGELES AND VENTURA COUNTIES WILL LIKELY SEE THE LARGEST IMPACTS OF THIS POWERFUL SURF EVENT...THE SOUTHEAST DIRECTION OF THE INITIAL SWELL ENERGY WILL ALSO BRING THE POTENTIAL FOR A RARE HIGH SURF EVENT WITH DANGEROUS RIP CURRENTS FOR THE SOUTHEAST PORTION OF SANTA BARBARA COUNTY. IN VENTURA COUNTY...BEACHES AT OR NEAR PORT HUENEME...POINT MUGU...COUNTY LINE...AND OXNARD SHORES WILL BE MOST IMPACTED BY THE HIGH SURF. * IMPACTS...THIS POWERFUL SURF EVENT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO PRODUCE STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO PIERS AND BEACH SIDE PROPERTY AS WELL AS SIGNIFICANT BEACH EROSION. THE POWERFUL SURF WITH VERY STRONG RIP CURRENTS AND LONG SHORE CURRENTS WILL CREATE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SWIMMING AND SURFING CONDITIONS... POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING. SNEAKER WAVES CAN BRING UNEXPECTEDLY LARGE WAVES ACROSS ROCKS AND JETTIES NEAR THE WATERS EDGE...AND SUDDENLY INUNDATE BEACHES. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... EMERGENCY AND MARINE INTERESTS SHOULD BEGIN TO TAKE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS TO PREPARE FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF A DAMAGING SURF EVENT FOR SOUTH AND SOUTHEAST FACING BEACHES. THE PALOS VERDES PENINSULA...INCLUDING LONG BEACH...CABRILLO BEACH...AND POINT FERMIN WILL BE ESPECIALLY VULNERABLE IN THE EARLY STAGES OF THE EVENT DUE TO THE SOUTHEAST DIRECTION OF THE INITIAL SWELL ENERGY THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH TONIGHT. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE IN THE WATER...STAY ON THE SHORE. STAY OFF ROCKS AND JETTIES AND AWAY FROM THE WATERS EDGE TO AVOID BEING SWEPT AWAY BY SNEAKER WAVES. NEVER TURN YOUR BACK TO THE OCEAN. REMEMBER...IF CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT...SWIM PARALLEL TO SHORE UNTIL YOU ARE FREE OF THE POWERFUL CURRENT.
